amor fati?
Amor fati is a Latin phrase that may be translated as "love of fate" or "love of one's fate."
The aim of this project is to help me to find a love of my fate, and in doing so share some useful tips and practices and ideas that will help others to find a love of their fate.
The plan is to set myself an experiment or goal each month that - based on my research on happiness, meaning and fate itself - that should help me get closer to my goal of amor fati.
Each experiment will involve 2–3 different practices or regular actions that I can take over the course of the month's experiment. I’m measuring my love of fate with a very simple little form that I’ll fill in at the end of each month, as well as keeping updates here on Substack.
the next experiment: connect
What does connection have to do with loving fate?
Last month, I discovered that one of my new values is Connection. When thinking about what I would “do” to make this value real, I focussed on connection with others. And while I do believe that would be a great experiment for Project: AMOR FATI, I’m not convinced it’s the best for Gemini season.
There’s actually more to connection than interacting with others. When giving more thought to what it means to feel connected, I realised that there is also:
Connection to self
Connection to purpose / something bigger
These are easy to forget, because they’re less concrete than seeing friends or filling up your social calendar. These are subtle, but hugely impactful when it comes to how we feel about our fate on a day to day basis.
If I’m not feeling connected to myself, I can end up feeling overwhelmed, anxious, ungrounded, and really quite out of sorts. If I don’t feel connected to purpose or something bigger than all of this nonsense… well for me that’s depression at its worst.
Season of the twins ♊️
I think I can only tackle one of these monsters this month, and because we’re in Gemini season, it has to be: Connection to self.
Why? Well some of the most common woes I hear from my clients with certain Gemini placements, seem to stem from a disconnection with themselves.
This can look like:
surface level interactions
fear of vulnerability
lack of intimacy
challenges with commitment (to a project or person)
taking on too many tasks at once
difficulty being alone with their thoughts
Not all of these are things I struggle with, but I definitely think that I can get overwhelmed by stimulation (hi, phone!) and take on too many projects at once. Oh and I have a lot of “unread book guilt.”
What I’m hoping to achieve with this month’s experiment:
A deeper sense of peace in myself
A greater sense of focus
Less overwhelm
Now, the plan isn’t to give myself a load of new activities to do to try and reconnect with myself – that would be falling into the old Gemini trap.
Instead, we’re going to lean into what already is (amor fati) and deepen our connection with… whatever happens to be within us.
how to follow along
If you're interested in reading updates on my journey to amor fati, I invite you to follow along, which you can do very easily, and for free, by Subscribing to this stack...
I'm just one person of course. What works for me may not work for others, and vice versa. Plus, other people living out their own fates likely have a lot to teach me about what helps them to live and even love their fate.
So while I'm researching this, I want to know if these practices work for others. And if like me, you're interested in hanging out with a bunch of other soldiers of fate each month, you can go one step further and sign up using a short form, linked below.
Filling that out means I can email you the links to the private discussion groups held on zoom at the end of each experiment. In addition, I might offer you 1:1 call to go more in depth on how your birth chart (I'm an astrologer by the way) reflects your experience of fate.
the practice
This month I decided on one, actually quite fun (in theory) practice. In the spirit of not overwhelming ourselves, and keeping things playful for that fun-loving Hermes who oversees this experiment.
I call it…
*Dating Your Self*
I mean, you want to fall in love with your fate - why not go on some dates?
Step #1: Make a list of date ideas
It’s important that the dates are things that take us out of our busy mind, our to-do list, other people’s nonsense etc. They are meant to help us connect with our physical and emotional feelings, and get into whatever it is that gets masked by thinking.
Some ideas from my list:
Go for a walk with no phone or music
Freestyle dance party
Self massage
Paint without a plan
Body scan (I like a guided meditation for this)
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 sense check*
*This is actually quite hard, but so awesome to try. Wherever you are, list 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste.
If you have more ideas, I’d love to know! Leave a comment or email: hello@catroseastrology.com
Step #2: Write them onto scraps of paper
Step #3: Screw up the paper & put in a jar
Step #4: Daily, pick a date out of the jar - and do it!
My goal is to allow 30 minutes a day for these dates. It feels more meaningful than 15, and not so overwhelming as an hour.
Any questions, send me an email: hello@catroseastrology.com
